Navin Sadarangani here...
and I begin my Journey to Influence as
on 24th October 2021, my golden birthday.

Through real-world and digital mediums, I evangelize my learnings of Investment, Values and Design of the jewellery industry. Whether it is at Industry Conferences or Instagram, Facebook, Twitter or even my blog here, I hope to influence the trade and the public through my point of view.

I was a fluke entry into the jewellery industry in 1992 with one of the world’s leading diamond groups, Rosy Blue owned Intergold at SEEPZ. Having spent all of my employee years with the same Group, I had the privilege of experiencing International Sales, Manufacturing (International Gold Co Ltd), Retail Stores Management (Orra) and also Wholesale (Hammer Plus) in the domestic markets of India. Sports was and remains close to my heart. For me Sports is beyond Cricket and I have been indulgent in Hockey, Football, Carrom and Badminton. I enjoy playing with Words too and hence Conversation with even the unknown holds a special thrill for me. Social Media communication is a new obsession. Ingrained in me are my middle-class values that I’m thankful to my family for and also the fact that I remain a teetotaler and non-smoker.

My last 16 years, into entrepreneurship as NYUZ – with a small team into Coaching and Consulting in jewellery retail we have trained more than 7500 retail sales professionals across 180 jewellers of mass zand class retail, nationally and internationally. JEWELLERY SPEAKS !

People say Jewellery speaks about the wearer, it gives an idea of the persona, it talks of status, maybe even talks of love. But to me, jewellery is more than a talking piece. In certain cultures jewellery is not only seen as adornment but as a symbol of the self, the inner-self. Jewellery is also about ones culture and tradition, it signifies one's belonging to a group or perhaps even an era (I once read that bracelets gave women in ancient India some kind of superpower; they could sense when their husbands were having affairs).

It speaks of love

It signifies love because if one looks at the history of jewellery, it's said that men used to give their women gold or diamond jewelry as a sign of love.

My wife has a small collection of jewellery items. Her favourite piece in this collection is the one she got from my Mom during our first Valentine, just 4 days after we got married in the February of 2000. Many of the other pieces that she has are worth more than this emerald and diamond pendant in yellow gold , but there isn't any piece that can ever replace its value in her life. It has the unspoken love of my Mom and Me together in it, because it was something that I had made for my Mom, from design to supervising its making.

I share this story with you, as this piece of jewellery resurfaced as we organised our jewellery collection during these covid times. Unfailingly this piece of jewellery spoke and touched our heart, as we took stock of our memories. Hopefully it touched your heart too!

It communicates a person's lifestyle and values

In today's society, it is very popular to have a huge collection of jewellery pieces. In many cases, I see people wearing so much jewellery they might as well be keeping their hands warm with gloves on. Some people may rightfully argue that sometimes you need to think about the amount of jewellery you're wearing because if one is wearing too many or too much, it could make other people think you are showing off. It is important to analyse the jewellery one is wearing because if one has a good idea on what kind of person they are looking to portray, they will make the right choice of jewellery.

Jewellery is about more than just having a huge collection of many different kinds of styles and types, its about communicating with the world around you through the jewellery you wear.

Jewellery signifies wealth and class because it's worth money. Jewellery is more than just something that you wear on your body; it's actually something that speaks about who you are and what you stand for.

Think about it, what does your jewellery speak about You ?

It is a mark of one's cultural identity

Jewelry has always been associated with people's cultural identity. Historically, the earliest forms of jewellery are things like beads made from various stones and shells. It is believed that around 70,000 years ago , early man started drilling holes through these objects in order to wear them.

There are some jewellers who consider the soul of their creations. They create pieces that they feel or imagine will speak to the wearer, pieces that tell a story about how the person was feeling at the time they bought it, or why they chose a particular item. The older pieces are probably the most valuable ones because they can tell a story that is almost impossible to find in any other way.

Jewellery is something that has been passed on through generations. The older pieces are very hard to come by, but millions of people have more contemporary jewellery which tells a story about how their life was at the time. It is a mark of one's cultural identity...So unique it is to us, so personal.

Jewellery speaks also about the story of who someone was at a particular time in their life. This could be in terms of how they dressed or even in terms of the kinds of jewellery they wore. It's so much more than just something you put on. It is a mark of one's cultural identity!

THE JEWELLERY
CHOSEN SHOWS
HOW VAIN OR
SELFLESS
SOMEONE IS
AS WELL AS THEIR
AGE AND STATUS
WITHIN SOCIETY

Jewellery speaks volumes about the wearer. It may be an indication of the person's age, status within society, their taste in fashion or even their ability to express themselves with accessories. What one considers to be beautiful might not always be the same as someone else, even if only separated by age group.

It always amuses me when I see an older woman sporting jewels covered in neon pink stones or faux pearls that look like they were bought from the high street market. The nouveau rich women sometimes end up wearing oversized rings and earrings with vulgar designs. The jewellery chosen could also be an indicator of the kind of person someone is; whether vain or selfless, struggling financially but trying to keep up appearances, adhering to social conventions and regulations by wearing only approved items etc.

It's quite astonishing to see well-travelled people who do not follow fashion's strict rules and regulations; The amount of people who fail to see how appalling it is that they would even consider wearing such garish things, makes me feel embarrassed on their behalf. Of course if one is not inclined or interested in my opinion on fashion, then I suppose it does not matter.

Hence the jewellery chosen by an individual may reveal many things about them. We all want to be seen as desirable, so we dress up with items such as smart clothes or expensive watches. Jewellery speaks of status and class. It may also speak of love and affection if worn as a gift from someone special. The jewellery we choose to wear reflects what is important to us, not only in life but the sort of person we are too. It certainly speaks volumes about who people are or at least, who they want others to think they are…

Jewellery has an interesting and very important history of speaking. It speaks of love, of cultural identity, of status and even of vanity. From ancient times it has been an expression for the wearer and there is no surprise that this tradition carries on today with so many jewellery forms available to use as a way to communicate your likes and loves to the world around you.
